Nerves are cells that like any other need nutrients to remain healthy. After injury the nerve can become inflamed and lack glucose, this causes it to send signals to the brain that are then interpreted as pain.

Perineural injection therapy was discovered by Dr. Lyftogt and is a 5% dextrose (glucose) solution that is injected near superficial nerves. The superficial nerves communicate with the deeper nerves and muscles. With the injections of alkaline dextrose solution, the superficial nerves are able to heal, reducing and eliminating pain. PIT treats the entire muscular-neuro-vascular bundle. PIT treats inflammation and injury by feeding and hydrating the injured nerve. 

PIT therefore not only treats the pain but allows for the body to heal appropriately.

Dextrose is a naturally occurring carbohydrate utilized by the body for energy. Dextrose enters the nerve cell receptor and restores the cell to its normal function. This process leads to the decrease and eventual elimination of pain. The fluid in the injection helps to hydrate connective tissue and break apart fascial adhesions. Dehydrated tissue can exacerbate nerve pain by pressing tightly on the nerve passing through it.

PIT is generally well tolerated and there is no need for a local anesthetic. 

The injections are done with a very small and short needle that goes just below the surface of the skin. The number of injections vary based on the degree of the neuropathic inflammation, the length of time the inflammation has been present, and the location being treated. (ie: the back will require more injections than the knee or shoulder)

Generally patients experience immediate relief after the first treatment. Some patients may only need a single treatment where others may require subsequent treatments. After each session patients will notice decrease in pain, and increase in range of motion and mobility. The treatment session are quick, easy and effective.
